Port Augusta
Port Augusta is known as the Crossroads of Australia and is the
prefect getaway to the Flinders Ranges. It’s here that major
highways entering South Australia from Western Australia, the Northern
Territory and New South Wales converge, and it’s also an important
rail hub.
Whilst in Port Augusta you cannot leave without visiting The Wadlata
Outback Centre featuring hands-on displays like the Tunnel Of Time,
revealing the pre-history of the Outback.
The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden offers a unique close-up
of the plants, birds and animals of semi-arid Australia.
The School of the Air reveals how children of the outback are educated
using modern communications technology and the Royal Flying Doctor
Service provides medical aid to outback communities and covers an
area the size of Western Europe.
Pichi Richi Railway
Ride the historic Pichi Richi Railway departing Port Augusta Railway
Station and arriving in Quorn experiencing some of the prettiest
scenery in the Central Flinders Ranges. The Pichi Richi Railway
Preservation Society Inc. has, since its formation in 1973, been
dedicated to the preservation, restoration and operation of the
Pichi Richi Railway, the first leg of the old Central Australian
Railway to Alice Springs - the old Ghan route. The society has built
up a collection of historic narrow gauge rolling stock of the old
South Australian and Commonwealth Railways. These are restored and
operated on a voluntary basis. The line has been extended through
to Port Augusta, so trains now depart from both the Quorn and Port
Augusta Railways Stations on a regular basis.
